Eight tickets before anyone asked
Every group has one person who just buys the tickets.
Maybe I’m becoming that guy.
Dan Mangan was born in Smithers. Two of my sisters were born there too — I’ve never been, but it’s an important place, and definitely on my list.
I had my eye on a show of his in Cumberland a while back, but it didn’t work out. Brenda and I did get a date night on December 9th, 2023, watching him finish that show in the middle of the crowd on the floor of the Vogue Theatre (where Brenda attempted an awkward video “ussie”).
In 2011, Fraser, Gavin, Bren, and I went down to Olympic Village for a “secret” pop-up show put on by 102.7 The PEAK. I could still throw the boys up onto my shoulders in a crowd for a better view. “Robots” reverberating in the square — need love too — with cardboard robots invited to dance on stage in front of him.
Flash forward to yesterday. Gavin texts The Brown Family chat at 7:10pm:
“35$ for Dan mangan in Quadra on the 20th of March”
I looked it up. He’s performing at the Quadra Community Centre — where we held our wedding reception, after we were married by the ocean on our nearby family property on the South end of the Island. AND we’re going to be there for this upcoming spring break.
By 8:00pm I had purchased eight tickets: for the five of us, plus three extra for friends or family... Anyone else can buy their own!
Closer to ‘home’ than Cumberland (although lovely, and we do have great friends there). At our favourite place, all together, soaking in live music like a big Brown Family sponge.
I think the ask was implied, and I happily answered.
